Doomsday Preppers
I have watched 7 or 8 episodes of "Doomsday Preppers." In the beginning, I thought it will be a good show. After watching episodes that are several we changed my mind. I think Nat Geo's objective is to make anybody who thinks planning for bad times is a good concept out to be a nutcase. I am maybe not making any judgements about the social people featured on the show. I do believe the show is intentionally slanted to help make these people look crazy. While there are definitely people who call themselves "preppers" that are extremists, and some being probably mentally unstable, you will discover that in most segment of the populace & not just into the preparedness community. To say that the people on Doomsday Preppers are "typical preppers," is like saying that individuals on Jersey Shore are "typical People in america."
Doomsday Preppers
The term "prepper" means various things to people that are different. To some it means having a couple of months of meals & water stored up in case of a natural catastrophe. To others, a year that is full supply of food for their family. Some folks think they're prepared whether they have a case of MRE's, their trusty rifle, and a couple thousand rounds of ammo. There's absolutely no exact definition. Everyone else needs to decide they are comfortable with for their own family for themselves what level of preparedness.
I think preparedness is a lot more than just having stuff. It is a way of residing. Attempting become responsible for yourself & your family, & doing the most readily useful you can to be able to care for yourself if something bad comes along. We'm not looking for "the end worldwide." In the event that end of the planet comes, then we're done anyway, who needs to prepare for that? A zombie apocalypse? An TV that is entertaining movie idea maybe, but not likely to happen. But there are normal disasters that happen all the right time throughout the world. Our economy is already in bad shape. Anyone that thinks it can't or won't get worse is naive at best. Terrorists are not just overseas anymore. Plain & simple - bad material takes place to good people everyday, all over the world.
If you do not feel the need to organize for hard times or catastrophes, that is your preference. However if something bad does happen, you (& a complete lot of other people) will be at the mercy of someone else to come quickly to your aid. If you are intending to FEMA, or various other government agency to rescue you, you may want to work on a little better plan. Even FEMA will tell you that you shouldn't expect any assistance from their store for at least 72 hours, & that you must certanly be ready to be mindful of yourself & your household for at least that long. Me now where it is, because I'd like to move my family there if you live somewhere that is exempt from the possibility of any natural or man-made disaster, please let!
Being a prepper doesn't require you be crazy, as Doomsday Preppers would have many people believe. Just what it does need is some level of responsibility for your self, and your family. Not relying in the national government, or the kindness of others to give you through crisis, when you could have done it for yourself. It takes that you have got a desire to have some level of self-sufficiency, and to be able to overcome those hard times, whatever they might be. Those people who refuse to be responsible enough to manage themselves simply become the main issue. Any time you will find major emergencies, first responders become overrun quickly. If your plan that is entire is another person in the future rescue you, you may be waiting quite awhile!
My opinion is that anyone who really thinks that nothing bad could happen to them ever is naive, arrogant, and irresponsible. The America we grew up in is gone forever. In a few ways that's good, in other people, it's bad. We now have numerous more modifications coming, and I feel that a great deal of these will never be changes that are good. I think as people, we have to do everything we can to prepare for people modifications. We need to do all we could to protect our families from hard times. We need to develop friendships & build communities of like minded people, so we can come together and help one another. The people that prepare & come together will ensure it is through the times that are rough the same as they constantly have. Those that don't may find themselves in less than desirable circumstances.
